A car crashed into a gas store along Arab Road in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday morning, triggering an explosion that damaged nearby structures and sent shockwaves through the surrounding area.
Witnesses said the blast, which occurred at about 6:15 a.m., was powerful enough to shake buildings some distance from the scene. Residents of Dantata Estate, located about two kilometers away, reportedly felt their buildings vibrate following the explosion.
One resident said the loud blast woke people from their sleep and caused initial confusion as residents tried to determine what had happened.
The explosion and resulting fire destroyed a shelter and signposts at the nearby Liberty Junction, while several shops in the vicinity were also affected. The vehicle involved in the crash was completely burnt.
The driver of the vehicle and a child were rescued from the scene and taken to hospital for medical attention.
Security personnel and firefighters were deployed to the area to contain the situation and restore normalcy.
A large crowd of onlookers also gathered at the scene, causing disruption to the free flow of traffic around the area.
