The pilot of the Nigerian Air Force aircraft that crashed near Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Monday is being credited in local accounts with navigating the troubled plane away from the populated town and towards a swampy area in what may have prevented a far greater tragedy on the ground.

The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42, with tail number NGR 931, was on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos when air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13 a.m.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said repeated attempts by air traffic controllers to establish radio contact with the aircraft failed.

“All efforts to raise the aircraft on radio proved abortive,” Keyamo said.

But while communication with the ground had apparently been lost, accounts emerging from Igbokoda suggest that the pilot still had some control of the aircraft as it approached the coastal community.

It is what he allegedly did with that control in the aircraft’s final moments that has become a major talking point in Igbokoda.

According to an account circulated by @cokeboi1_, the pilot avoided the built-up part of the town and navigated the failing aircraft towards the swamp close to the Naval Base.

The account suggests that the manoeuvre may have prevented the aircraft from crashing into homes and other buildings, potentially adding casualties on the ground to those aboard.

The Nigerian Air Force and aviation authorities had, however, not confirmed by Monday evening that the pilot deliberately steered the aircraft away from the community.

What officials and residents agree on is where the aircraft eventually came down: not in the populated part of Igbokoda, but in a bushy, waterlogged area across the river and opposite the Naval Base.

The traditional ruler of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, underscored the significance of the crash location as he expressed relief that the aircraft missed the town.

“Our first thanks to Almighty is that it didn’t fall inside town,” the monarch said.

According to him, the aircraft crossed the river before coming down in the swamp. He said he had feared the consequences had it crashed within the populated community, where casualties could have extended to residents on the ground.

The monarch also suggested that the waterlogged terrain may have helped prevent a major fire after the crash.

Initial confusion surrounded the type of aircraft involved.

Ilaje Local Government Chairman Maurice Oripelaye initially described it as a helicopter, saying military equipment had been discovered at the scene. Residents had reported hearing a loud sound before news of the crash spread through the community.

The Air Force subsequently identified the aircraft as an ATR-42 travelling from Benin to Lagos.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said search-and-rescue operations had commenced in collaboration with other agencies.

Keyamo put the preliminary number of people aboard at 32 — 25 passengers and seven crew members. He said he had spoken with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and offered the assistance of the Aviation Ministry.

Access to the wreckage was complicated by Igbokoda’s creek and swamp terrain, forcing some residents to join the search using canoes.

An official of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Michael Achimugu, said bodies were being recovered, while Sahara Reporters, citing sources, reported that all 32 occupants were believed dead.

Neither the Air Force nor the Aviation Ministry had, however, officially confirmed a final casualty figure by Monday evening. Police also cautioned residents against spreading unverified information while rescue and recovery operations continued.

The identities of the pilot, other crew members and passengers had also not been officially released, while authorities had yet to establish the cause of the crash.

For Igbokoda, however, one fact was already visible: the aircraft came down in the swamp rather than among the houses.

Whether investigators eventually confirm that this was the result of a deliberate final manoeuvre by the pilot remains to be established.

But for residents looking across the river at the wreckage, the possibility carries particular poignancy—that in the final moments of a doomed flight, the pilot may have used whatever control remained to spare the town below
