The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has applauded the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount initiative, saying the policy could help reduce transportation costs, ease cost-of-living pressures and strengthen economic activity across the country.

In a press statement dated October 1, 2026, PETROAN said the intervention comes at a critical time, given the strong link between transportation costs and the prices of food, agricultural produce, manufactured goods and other essential commodities.

The association, however, called on the Federal Government to allocate 30 per cent of the total volume of discounted petrol to PETROAN’s retail network, arguing that its widespread presence across local government areas, towns, villages and hard-to-reach communities would help ensure the intervention reaches more Nigerians.

PETROAN said lower petrol costs for public transport operators could translate into reduced fares for commuters, cheaper movement of agricultural produce and lower logistics expenses for businesses.

It added that these effects could help moderate food prices and ease inflationary and cost-of-living pressures if savings are transmitted effectively across the supply chain.

The association also positioned its nationwide retail network as a strategic platform for expanding the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative, particularly in underserved communities where access to alternative energy solutions remains limited.

PETROAN National President, Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, commended the government for recognising the importance of transportation to the economy but urged authorities to ensure transparent and efficient implementation of the programme.

He called for clear guidelines on the discount per litre, eligible beneficiaries, monitoring mechanisms and distribution channels, stressing that the success of the initiative should ultimately be measured by its impact on transport fares, food prices, business costs, and household purchasing power.

PETROAN further urged NNPC, transport operators, petroleum marketers and relevant government agencies to work together to ensure the policy achieves its intended objectives, while calling for an assessment of the 30-day programme and possible continuation of measures that deliver measurable economic relief.
