The Federal Ministry of Works has dismissed reports suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the discontinuation of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway in favour of reconstructing the East–West Road.
In a clarification issued by the Ministry’s Director of Highway Bridges and Design, Engr. Musa Saidu, the government explained that the reconstruction of the East–West Road is an additional project and will not affect the original 750-kilometre dualised Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.
According to the statement, the East–West Road requires reconstruction due to severe pavement damage and flooding associated with climate change. The additional project is expected to run alongside the coastal highway development.
The Ministry also confirmed that construction is ongoing on several sections of the coastal highway within the Niger Delta region, while surveying and design work continues on the remaining sections.
It added that procurement and construction of the outstanding sections will commence after the completion of the necessary survey and design work, starting from the end of the Ondo axis.
The Federal Government urged Nigerians to disregard misinformation surrounding the projects, assuring the public that the additional road reconstruction will not alter or disrupt the original alignment of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.
