A Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Sunday Michael, to five months in a correctional centre for stealing an aluminium window frame valued at N200,000.
Delivering judgment, the court’s President, Mrs O.E. Owoseni held that she convicted and sentenced Michael based on his guilty plea and the prosecution’s evidence before the court.
Owoseni held that the evidence against the convict needed no further proof since he voluntarily admitted committing the crime.
“Therefore, the convict is sentenced to five months in the correctional centre or an option of six months of community service,” the President of the court said.
Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Insp Ayodele Ayeni had informed the court that the convict committed the crime on Oct. 31, at about 4.45 a.m., at Ile-Aje, Idiikan area, Mokola, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Revealing the facts of the matter, Ayeni said that Michael was arrested after he was caught forcefully removing the aluminum window frame with the glass of a shop which belonged to one Mr Opeyemi Ayeloja.
The prosecutor added that a neighbour who sighted the convict stealing the frame alerted passers-by who eventually apprehended Michael and was taken to Mokola police station.
According to him, the offence contravenes the provision of section 390 (9) of the criminal code cap 38 vol. 11 law of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.
