Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has declared reasons for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, and reversing his position in the 2023 presidential contest.

Okowa made the disclosure on Saturday while addressing supporters at the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The former governor was the running mate to former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 election, when they contested against Tinubu.

Explaining his decision to support the President, Okowa said his assessment of the direction of the country under the current administration had changed his political position.

He acknowledged that he was previously on the opposition side but said he was now convinced that Tinubu was taking steps in the right direction.

“I was in another ticket in 2023 but I have now seen the light. I have seen what Tinubu is doing. I have seen where Nigeria is going. I cannot stay in darkness when there is light,” he said.

Okowa also defended the President’s policies, arguing that Tinubu had demonstrated good intentions towards Nigeria despite the difficulties associated with some of his administration’s decisions.

He maintained that some of the government’s difficult decisions were beginning to produce results, although he did not identify specific policies or outcomes in his remarks.

“I am not here to deceive anybody. I have been in opposition before. I know what it is to be in opposition. But when you see the truth, you must follow the truth,” the former governor added.

Okowa’s declaration marks a shift from his position during the 2023 presidential election, when he campaigned alongside Atiku under the PDP.

His latest endorsement comes as political activities and alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general election.
