Employees of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) have shut down its offices across the 36 states of the federation and its head office in Abuja over a delay in the implementation of their salary adjustment.

The aggrieved workers under the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) and the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (NUBIFI), stormed the NSITF offices as early as 8a.m on Friday, chanting solidarity songs, the AIT reports.

Reports said that ASSBIFI, an affiliate of the trade union congress (TUC) and NUBIFI, an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have had several meetings with the NSITF management and the ministry of Labour and Employment, but the meetings have not brought solution to their demands.

The protesting workers reportedly said that the NSITF management had agreed to begin the implementation of the new salary adjustment and review from January 2023 but they kept shifting the date.

In a media chat with journalists in his office, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, was said to have promised that he would begin the implementation of the new salary packages.

However, at the time of filing this report, the NSITF management and officials of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment have not reacted to the workers’ protest.
