Dr Bashir Jamoh has completed his tenure as the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMSA).

Jamoh’s tenure came to an end on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

Although the Presidency is yet to decided on who to succeed the outgoing Director general, Jamoh has nanded over to the Executive Director in charge of Finance and Adminstraion of the gency, Chudi Ofordile who will act until a substantive DG is named by President Bola tinubu.

Jamoh was appointed as Director General of NIMASA on March 10, 2020, by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He replaced Dr. Dakuku Peterside.

Before that, Jamoh served as Executive Director, Finance and Administration of the agency.

NIMSA, formerly the National Maritime Authority, NMA, is responsible for regulatioins related to Nigerian shipping, maritime labour, and coastal waters.

The agency also undertakes inspectors and provides search and rescue services. The governing board includes representatyives of the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Transport, and the Nigerian Navy.

NIMASA was established by the Shipping Policy Decree of 11 May 1987 and was supervised by the Federal Ministry fo Transport. Its mandate was to ensure ordelry development, protection, and manpower training in the shipping industry.

It was also given responsibility for monitoring marine pllution and spillage in Nigerian waters. The oil platforms of the Niger Delta are vulnerable, and the decree recognised the role of maritime cargo carriage in defence.
