The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned “political parties and politicians” against “premature campaigns” ahead of the 2027 general election.
INEC’s warning comes amid the “emergence of posters and endorsements for the next election cycle.”

According to Punch, Rotimi Oyekanmi, chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, reiterated that the commission has “not released the official timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 polls.”

“The Independent National Electoral Commission has not released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections. To that extent, party primaries have not been held and no political party has nominated candidates for the next general election,” he said.

He cited “section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022,” which allows political parties to “commence campaigns only 150 days before the election,” and requires them to “end such activities 24 hours before the polls.”

He also referenced “section 95(1)” which mandates that “all campaigns must adhere to INEC’s regulations.”

While acknowledging that citizens have the right to “engage in political discussions,” Oyekanmi stated that any form of “open campaigning or vote canvassing” at this stage is “not only inappropriate but a violation of the Electoral Act.”
He noted that INEC “raised the issue with party representatives” at its most recent “quarterly consultative meeting” and expects “full compliance.”
