The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade has praised the impressive performance of Nigerian athletes at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Speaking on Team Nigeria’s showing, Olopade noted that many of the athletes, especially those competing in their first major international championship, have exceeded expectations.
“The Islamic Games have given us a valuable platform to showcase and develop our athletes, and we’re making the most of it.”
“We are not here solely to win medals,” he said. “Our primary goal is to provide opportunities for talents discovered at the National Sports Festival and to create a platform for invited junior athletes as they progress toward national and international prominence.”
He added that the commission has a clear roadmap for revitalizing Nigerian sports, backed fully by the President. “There will be a gradual paradigm shift in how our athletes see the country. The President has consistently supported every initiative aimed at empowering our sports sector.”
Olopade also commended the commitment of the athletes, applauding their willingness to represent Nigeria despite the competition falling outside their regular season.
“Kudos to Obiageri Pamela Amaechi, Chioma Chukwujindu ‘CiCi’ Onyekwere, Elizabeth Anyanacho, and the rest of the team for their unwavering faith in this country. They continue to give their best whenever they are called upon.
“We know we’re not yet where we ought to be, but we are working to change the narrative. We’re focusing on the small but critical details of proper kitting so athletes feel no inferiority, timely payment of bonuses, and even a special package for elite athletes next year. Better days are ahead; we just ask our athletes to keep the faith,” he said.
