The Super Eagles of Nigeria are preparing to chase a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title when they head to Morocco for the 2025 edition of the tournament.
Nigeria last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013, but none of the players from that victorious squad are included in Eric Chelle’s current lineup. Despite this, the team features some of Africa’s finest talents, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Calvin Bassey.
Expectations among Nigerian fans remain cautious, reflecting the team’s recent struggles. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite being given a playoff spot and produced an underwhelming performance in their only warm-up match ahead of the AFCON.
Still, the tournament in Morocco could present an opportunity for a fresh start. Beyond national pride, the financial incentives for the players and coaching staff provide an additional motivation.
CAF has steadily increased prize money for the AFCON in recent years. The 2025 edition carries a total prize pot of $32 million, the same as in 2023. Nigeria has already pocketed $350,000 for topping their AFCON qualification group.
The payouts for the tournament are structured as follows:
Group stage 4th place: $500,000
Group stage 3rd place: $700,000
Round of 16: $800,000
Quarterfinals: $1.3 million
Semifinals: $2.5 million
Runner-up: $4 million
Champion: $7 million
If Nigeria lifts the trophy in Morocco, the total earnings for the Super Eagles will reach $11.6 million, roughly ₦17.4 billion.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to kick off on December 21 and will conclude on January 18, 2026.
