A Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi, Lagos State, has ordered a 48‑year‑old man, Makinde Rasaq, to serve 13 months of community service at Kirikiri Correctional Centre for illegally dumping waste in the city.

Rasaq was arrested last week on Lagos Island after officials found him with a Honda SUV loaded with refuse.

He was charged with seven offences, including breach of peace, indiscriminate waste dumping, failure to use licensed waste operators, illegal transportation of waste, and obstructing government officials in the performance of their duties.

He pleaded guilty to all charges.

Instead of prison time, the court gave him various terms of imprisonment that were converted into community service, which together total 13 months

Rasaq was caught dumping trash around the Tinubu Fountain area in Central Lagos and was first held at Adeniji‑Adele Police Station before being handed over to the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) unit and arraigned by lawyers from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.

Officials say the sentence is part of Lagos State’s strong enforcement of environmental laws and sends a message that illegal waste disposal will not be tolerated.

The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly through accredited operators to help keep the city clean.
