A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has called on supporters of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to formally join the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, Okonkwo said Obi’s loyalists who had not registered with the ADC could no longer be regarded as true “Obidients.” He argued that remaining outside the party amounted to disobedience to the movement’s current political direction.

Okonkwo recalled that during his time in the Labour Party, he considered it a strategic error to encourage supporters to spread across different political platforms. He expressed satisfaction that Obi had since revised that approach, noting that the former governor recently urged his supporters during an X Space interview to register with the ADC.

Praising the ADC, Okonkwo described the party as a platform for committed democrats, stressing that internal democracy was non-negotiable. He said the party had resisted imposing conditions or accommodating special interests to ensure a strong and disciplined foundation.

He further claimed that the ADC enjoyed strong backing in the South-East and suggested that politicians outside the party were indirectly supporting President Bola Tinubu.

Welcoming Obi’s recent defection to the ADC, Okonkwo said he was prepared to support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate after the primaries ahead of the 2027 election.
