The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has attributed the survival of British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, in a recent fatal road accident to what he described as the mercy of God.

Adeboye spoke on Sunday during the RCCG monthly thanksgiving service, where he preached on the subject of divine preservation through mercy, citing Joshua’s accident as a clear example.

Joshua was involved in a crash last Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The accident claimed the lives of two of his close friends — Ayodele Kelvin, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, also 36, a British citizen — while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Quoting from Lamentations 3:22–23, Adeboye stressed that human survival is not due to personal skill or intelligence but purely by God’s mercy.

“It is by the mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed. We are alive because of the mercies of the Lord, not because of cleverness,” he said.
The cleric added that reports indicated Joshua had exchanged seats with another occupant shortly before the crash occurred.

“The people he exchanged seats with died. I don’t know why, but the mercy of God said someone would still be alive today,” Adeboye stated.

Drawing from Psalm 89:1, he urged worshippers to take the message personally, emphasizing that the use of singular expressions in Scripture underscores God’s personal interest and intervention in individual lives.

The tragic accident continues to draw reactions across the world, with many expressing condolences to the families of the deceased and gratitude for Joshua’s survival.
