Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, who made the donation in Akure on Monday, said the gathering provided an opportunity to ‘solemnly honour the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacies of fallen heroes’.

“We honor our men and women, who laid down their lives defending the nation during wars, insurgencies, terrorism, and peacekeeping missions.

“Our security agencies are also commended for their professionalism, and dedication to protecting lives and property in the state,” he said.

The governor used the opportunity to congratulate the newly-elected state and area council executives of the Nigerian Legion on their successful emergence in the recent election.

Aiyedatiwa also announced the personal donation of his one month salary to the launch of the emblem.

“We are not unmindful of the untold hardship borne by the wives, children and dependents left behind.

“It is in recognition of this reality that the state government has increased its financial support to the legion, in addition to other intervention windows available under this administration.

“I, therefore, urge the Nigerian Legion to encourage its members and widows to fully avail themselves of the social intervention and empowerment programmes of our administration, particularly those designed to uplift the less privileged.

”Our agencies will continue to render the necessary support to ensure that beneficiaries live dignified and socially fulfilling lives,” he said.

Earlier, Maj. Folorunso Akingboju (rtd), said the state government had continually provided financial support for empowerment of widows of the fallen and living heroes.

Akingboju, who said the government also continued to attend to the welfare of its veterans, widows, orphans and dependants, also expressed hope for more support.

Also, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Seun Osamaye, urged people to donate generously in honour of the heroes; both living and fallen.
