Bayern Munich increased their lead at the Bundesliga summit to 11 points after an 8-1 thrashing of Wolfsburg, extending the Bavarians’ unbeaten all-time head-to-head home record in the top flight to 29 matches (W27, D2).

Having ended 2025 with a comprehensive away win at Heidenheim, Bayern made a flying start to their first game of this year.

Luis Diaz’s delivery from the byline proved too difficult for Kilian Fischer to deal with, as the German full-back diverted the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Undeterred by that early setback, Wolfsburg found a swift response just eight minutes later, with Lovro Majer’s inch-perfect pass releasing Dzenan Pejcinovic, who held his nerve to slot a composed finish beyond Manuel Neuer.

After a frantic opening quarter-hour, Wolfsburg continued to threaten in the final third, as Christian Eriksen and Majer fired a pair of long-range efforts off target.

However, it was the Bavarians who restored their lead on the half-hour mark, when Michael Olise’s inswinging delivery was glanced into the bottom corner by Diaz, marking the 24th successive Bundesliga game in which Bayern have scored 2+ goals.

The Rekordmeister looked to press home their advantage before half-time, but Kamil Grabara stood firm in the visitors’ goal, denying a low strike from Lennart Karl.

Similar to the first half, Vincent Kompany’s men came storming out of the blocks at the start of the second period, and their attacking intent was duly rewarded with two goals in the space of three minutes.

First, Olise cut in off the right flank and curled a sublime strike into the far corner, before the Frenchman saw a dangerous cutback in the six-yard box bundled into his own net by Moritz Jenz.

Armed with a commanding three-goal cushion, Bayern continued to dominate proceedings, and after Harry Kane and Olise went close to finding the net, Raphael Guerreiro scored the hosts’ fifth with a simple tap-in after good work from Kane.

The Englishman added his name to the scoresheet just a minute later, curling a spectacular effort into the top corner for his 20th Bundesliga strike of the campaign.

Bayern refused to take their foot off the gas with time ticking into the final 15 minutes, and Olise bagged his second of the evening via a low finish from Diaz’s pass.

The goals weren’t finished there, however, with Leon Goretzka converting a clinical strike on the stretch to complete a remarkable victory for Kompany’s side, as the Bavarians took another giant step towards a 13th Bundesliga title in 14 seasons.
