Japan sets up liaison office following successive wildfires

Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has ordered the establishment of a liaison office to gather information in response to a series of wildfires that broke out in the vicinity of Tokyo.

Takaichi said this in a post on X that the government would work closely with local authorities and mobilise relevant ministries to prevent the fires from spreading further and to ensure the safety of residents.

A wildfire that erupted in Uenohara City, Yamanashi Prefecture, on Jan. 8 has yet to be fully contained.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out on Sunday in Hadano City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and firefighting efforts are still ongoing.

The wildfire also broke out in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo, on Sunday.

The fire was extinguished on Monday after burning for more than 24 hours, with no injuries or damage to homes reported, according to the fire department.
