JUST IN: INEC declares Diri as winner of Bayelsa governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday afternoon, November 3, 2023, declared incumbent governor, Senator Douye Diri winner of Saturday’s Bayelsa governorship election.

The declaration was made by the State Returning Officer, Prof Faruq Kuta, who announced the final scores as 175,196 votes for Diri, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, and 110,108 votes for his closest rival, former governor Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) – leaving a difference of 65,088 votes.

Besides, Diri clinched six of the eight local government areas of the oil-rich state while Sylva got two.
