The political crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly took a dramatic turn on Thursday as the Department of State Services (DSS) detained two lawmakers in connection with the controversial impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Hon. Sylvester Ogunkelu (Epe 2) and Hon. Lanre Afinni (Lagos Island 2) were reportedly arrested by the DSS for allegedly storming the Clerk’s office to seize the legislative mace—the symbol of authority used to remove Obasa from power.

Tension soared as a group of about 20 lawmakers stormed the DSS office in Shangisha on Thursday, demanding the immediate release of their detained colleagues.

However, security operatives barred journalists from entering the premises, further deepening the intrigue surrounding the arrests.

While Afinni was later freed on health grounds, Ogunkelu remained in custody at the time of this report.

Obasa was ousted as Speaker on 13 January while in the United States, following allegations of gross misconduct.

In his absence, the Assembly swiftly installed Mojisola Meranda as his successor.

Despite his removal, Obasa made a defiant return to Lagos last Saturday, rallying supporters and insisting that he remained the rightful Speaker.

However, the lawmakers had stood firm, declaring his impeachment final.

With tensions mounting and security agencies now involved, the Lagos Assembly crisis shows no signs of abating.
