Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has unveiled plans to introduce aerial surveillance into the state’s security system, announcing the imminent arrival of a surveillance aircraft to bolster law-enforcement operations across the state.

The governor disclosed this in the latest edition of his monthly newsletter, Number 125, describing the initiative as part of efforts to “take security to the skies” and close surveillance gaps in forested and hard-to-reach areas.

“This marks a new phase in our approach to security,” Makinde stated.

According to him, the aircraft, produced by the CETC Wuhu Diamond Aircraft Manufacturing Company in China, is scheduled to arrive in Oyo State by mid-November 2025.

The governor said the introduction of the aircraft was aimed at enhancing surveillance and intelligence gathering, especially in rural communities and border zones vulnerable to criminal activities.

“The goal is to introduce aerial support to complement our ground operations, especially in forested and hard-to-reach areas where criminals sometimes take refuge,” he said.

“We are building a fully integrated system that can detect, deter and respond to threats before they escalate.”

Makinde added that this new phase of the security initiative will complement existing frameworks such as the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) and other inter-agency collaborations in the state.

ThemomentNG understands that as part of the arrangement, local pilots from Oyo State will receive special training from the aircraft manufacturer in China.

Makinde described this as both a security investment and a skills-development opportunity for indigenes.

“We will also ensure that local professionals, especially our youth, gain the skills and opportunities needed to maintain and operate these systems,” he affirmed.

He noted that the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to capacity building and home-grown expertise in modern security operations.

Makinde recalled that since the inception of his administration, Oyo State had made significant investments in Amotekun, alongside support for the police, DSS, and other federal agencies, including the provision of operational vehicles, communication equipment, and welfare packages.

“All these measures are aimed at creating a safer environment and ensuring proactive responses to threats across the state,” the governor said.

The addition of aerial surveillance, he stressed, will strengthen ongoing operations and improve coordination between security agencies.
