Before rising to national prominence, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai spent a brief period shaping young professionals in the classroom. Around 1988, he served as a lecturer in Quantity Surveying at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria—an institution where he had earlier distinguished himself academically.

El-Rufai graduated from ABU in 1980 with a first-class degree in Quantity Surveying, emerging as one of the best students in his department. He followed this with an MBA from the same university in 1984. His academic excellence, combined with early professional exposure, made him a valuable resource in the Quantity Surveying department, where he taught and mentored students before fully venturing into private practice.

By 1982, he had co-founded El-Rufai & Partners, a quantity surveying and project management consultancy that would grow to become one of Nigeria’s leading firms in the field. His career also extended beyond Nigeria, as he took up positions with international telecommunications companies such as AT&T Network Systems International BV and Motorola Inc., gaining global experience in technology and infrastructure management.

El-Rufai’s entry into public service came in 2003 when President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. His tenure (2003–2007) was marked by sweeping urban reforms, land administration restructuring, and major development projects that reshaped Abuja. He later became Governor of Kaduna State, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023 and implementing wide-ranging reforms in governance, education, and infrastructure.
