Governor Bala Mohammed‘s government of Bauchi State has appointed no fewer than 142 district heads across the state’s 20 emirates and one chiefdom, in a move aimed at strengthening traditional governance and improving administration at the grassroots.

All the appointees have since been issued their letters of appointment, a development that will enable them to assume duties immediately without further delay.

The Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Abubakar Muhammad Wabi, disclosed this during a press briefing in Bauchi on Monday, where he explained the rationale and legal framework guiding the exercise.

According to Wabi, the appointments were carried out in line with the Bauchi State Chieftaincy (Appointment and Deposition) Law 2025, which provides the legal basis for the restructuring, recognition and effective operation of traditional institutions in the state.

“The exercise is in strict compliance with the Bauchi State Chieftaincy (Appointment and Deposition) Law 2025, which empowers the government to strengthen and reorganise traditional governance structures,” he said.

Wabi explained that the implementation of the law led to the creation of 20 Emirate Councils and one chiefdom, making it necessary to appoint qualified and competent district heads to manage affairs at the local level.

He noted that the newly appointed district heads would play a critical role in linking their communities with government authorities, especially in areas of security, conflict resolution and community development.

“These appointments are expected to enhance coordination between traditional rulers and government authorities, particularly at the grassroots level, where traditional institutions remain closest to the people,” Wabi added.

The commission chairman commended Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, for what he described as his leadership and commitment to reforms within the traditional institution.

He also praised other key stakeholders for their cooperation, noting that their support was instrumental to the successful implementation of the new chieftaincy law.

Wabi urged the newly appointed district heads to discharge their duties with a high sense of responsibility, fairness and accountability.

He stressed that the state government remained committed to promoting peace, unity and sustainable development through strong, responsive and credible traditional institutions.

“The expectation is that these district heads will serve their communities diligently and uphold the values of fairness, accountability and service, as the government continues to work towards peace, unity and sustainable development across Bauchi State,” he said.
