Meet Ajoke Muhammed-Wife of Late General Murtala Muhammed

Ajoke Muhammed is a respected Nigerian conservationist and the wife of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, Nigeria’s Head of State from 1975 to 1976.

She was born on May 23, 1941, and married General Muhammed in 1963.
Before becoming First Lady, Ajoke trained and worked as a dental therapist.
After her husband’s assassination in 1976, she gradually turned her focus to environmental conservation, a path that would define her life’s work.

Ajoke went on to establish major botanical projects in Nigeria.
One is the Murtala Muhammed Memorial Botanical Garden in Lagos, covering about 30 hectares.
The other is the Sarius Palmetum and Botanical Garden in Abuja, spanning roughly 20 hectares, known for its collection of rare and endangered plants.

She and General Muhammed had six children, and she has remained actively involved in preserving her husband’s legacy through the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, which supports education, women’s empowerment, and social development.

Her story is one of quiet strength, resilience, and lasting impact beyond power and politics.
