Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as the new Deputy Governor of the state.
The nomination follows the resignation of former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who stepped down on March 27 amid political tensions within the state executive arm and reported disagreements with the governor over governance and party alignment.
Gwarzo’s resignation created a vacancy in the office of deputy governor, prompting consultations within the administration and ruling political stakeholders over a replacement.
Garo, who has now been nominated, is widely known in Kano politics and is also the son-in-law of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
His selection is expected to be subject to screening and confirmation by the Kano State House of Assembly.
According to reports, the governor’s decision follows internal consultations and recommendations from political stakeholders.
Earlier indications had suggested that several names were under consideration, including senior political figures within the state structure, before Garo emerged as the preferred nominee.
If confirmed by the Assembly, Garo will serve as deputy governor under Yusuf, who has led the state since May 2023 following the annulled election dispute that was later settled by the Supreme Court.
The deputy governorship position is constitutionally significant, as the holder serves as second-in-command to the governor and is a key member of the State Executive Council.
Political observers say the nomination is likely to generate discussion given Garo’s political background and family links to a prominent national figure, as well as its implications for Kano’s evolving political alignments ahead of future elections.
