Ecobank says it is continuing to invest in young Nigerians by partnering with the Nigeria Chess Federation to host the 2026 Ecobank National Schools Team Chess Championship.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the championship is scheduled to be held from May 7 to May 8 in Lagos.

Speaking at the news conference on Wednesday in Lagos, Mr Adekunle Adewuyi,
Head of Education, Faith-Based and Social Services, Ecobank, said the initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to education and youth development.

He described chess as more than just a game, noting that it helps young people develop critical thinking, discipline and problem-solving skills.

According to him, the competition is designed to prepare students not only for tournaments but also for future leadership roles.

“Through this initiative, Ecobank is helping to prepare young Nigerians not just for competition, but for future leadership and workplace responsibilities,” he said.

Adewuyi said participation in the championship has grown steadily, from 1,210 students in 2024 to 1,830 students from 360 schools in 2025, with even more expected this year.

He attributed the increase to growing interest among schools and acknowledged the support of partners, including Schoolmate Nigeria.

Also, Mr Adeyinka Adewole, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, said the federation would handle the technical aspects of the competition, while Ecobank remained the lead sponsor.

“We have handled the technical component of this championship for the past three years successfully, and we are fully prepared for this edition,” he said.

Adewole said about 150 primary and 150 secondary schools are expected to take part in the 2026 edition.

He added that winners of previous editions had gone on to represent Nigeria at international competitions, noting that increased support could open more doors for young talents.

He also highlighted the employment potential in chess, explaining that skilled players could work as instructors or serve as tournament officials.

“Chess is creating employment opportunities, as trained players can teach in schools or serve as arbiters during competitions,” he said.

Mr Ambesh Kumar, Marketing Head of Schoolmate Nigeria, said the company partnered with the federation to support youth development through education and sport.

He noted that chess helps children build discipline, focus and strategic thinking, adding that the initiative aligns with efforts to nurture future champions.

“We are pleased to support this initiative and contribute to the development of young talents in Nigeria,” he said.

NAN reports that the championship has continued to grow as a platform for discovering young talents across the country, while helping students build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills.
