Tension rose in the Nigerian Senate after a disagreement between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole over how proceedings from a previous sitting were recorded.

According to a report by Sun Nigeria on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the issue started when Akpabio began reading the official record of the Senate’s last meeting. Oshiomhole interrupted, saying the document did not correctly reflect what lawmakers agreed on during discussions about new rules for who can become Senate President.

He tried to raise a procedural complaint, but Akpabio ruled it out, explaining that Senate rules do not allow such interruptions during that stage. To support this, former Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu confirmed that Oshiomhole’s action went against the rules.

Despite repeated warnings, Oshiomhole refused to sit down, leading Chief Whip Tahir Monguno to step in and warn that stronger action could be taken if the disruption continued.

Akpabio then explained the correct order of Senate activities, stressing that lawmakers must follow procedures and wait for the right time to raise concerns. He warned that continued defiance could lead to disciplinary action.

Oshiomhole, however, insisted that the Senate should not approve a record he believed was inaccurate.

After the situation escalated, Monguno enforced order, and Oshiomhole eventually complied. The Senate then moved forward, adopting the Votes and Proceedings after a motion by Adamu Aliero, seconded by Abba Moro.

In his words, “Oshiomhole, if you become unruly, we will use the rules to take you out of the Senate.”
