The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties complied with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 by submitting their membership registers ahead of the revised deadline for the 2027 general elections.

themomentng reports that INEC disclosed this in a statement, noting that the political parties completed the submission process before the May 10, 2026 deadline granted by the commission.

The electoral body explained that the deadline was extended following concerns raised by party leaders during a meeting held on March 24, 2026.

According to the commission, the initial deadline for submission was April 21, 2026, as contained in its Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election.

However, INEC later approved a two-week extension to accommodate requests by political parties seeking adjustments to their primary election schedules.

The commission formally announced the extension in a statement issued on March 27, 2026.

INEC stated that the decision was made in line with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires political parties to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before the conduct of primaries.

Political parties are expected to conduct their primary elections between April 23 and May 30, 2026.

The commission confirmed that all registered parties eventually complied within the extended timeframe.

“All registered political parties complied with the requirement within the extended timeframe,” INEC stated.

“The submitted registers will now be subjected to the necessary verification processes in line with the law.”

Political parties in Nigeria include the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), National Democratic Party (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Labour Party (LP), Accord Party (AP) and many others.
