English midfielder, Morgan Rogers has been named UEFA Europa League Player of the Season by UEFA after inspiring Aston Villa to their first major trophy in 30 years.
Morgan Rogers, 23, capped a remarkable European campaign with a goal and an assist in Villa’s 3-0 win over SC Freiburg in Wednesday’s final.
Rogers played a decisive role throughout the competition, finishing with three goals and five assists in 15 appearances. He also logged 1,088 minutes in the tournament, more than any other Villa player.
The award arrives just days before Thomas Tuchel is expected to announce England’s World Cup squad on Friday, with Rogers widely tipped to be included.
Villa dominated UEFA’s Team of the Season selections following their successful campaign. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, captain John McGinn and forward Emi Buendia were all included alongside Rogers.
The team was selected by UEFA’s technical observer group.
Nottingham Forest also had two players recognised after reaching the semi-finals before losing 4-1 on aggregate to Villa. Defenders Igor Jesus and Morato earned spots in the XI.
UEFA’s technical panel also highlighted two Villa goals from the final among the best strikes of the season. Buendia’s effort ranked fifth, while Youri Tielemans took seventh place.
The top spot went to Jones El-Abdellaoui for his stunning volley for Celta Vigo against Ludogorets Razgrad.
