The Benue Police Command has arrested five suspects linked to a syndicate allegedly involved in stealing motorcycles and vehicles across Benue and neighboring states.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Aondongu Orchia, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday in Makurdi.
Orchia said the breakthrough followed a petition by a resident of Gboko over the alleged theft of his red Bajaj motorcycle valued at N1.34 million.
He said the victim reported that a suspect deceitfully collected the motorcycle under the pretext of borrowing it and promised to return it the following day.
According to him, detectives attached to the Command Monitoring Unit commenced an intelligence-led investigation, including advanced tracking, leading to the arrest of the principal suspect.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was involved in the theft of other motorcycles and a Toyota Corolla,” he said.
Orchia said the stolen vehicles were allegedly disposed of in Dan-Anacha, Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.
He added that further investigation led detectives to Taraba, where the suspect’s accomplice and three other suspects were arrested.
The police spokesperson said two red Bajaj motorcycles and a Toyota Corolla were recovered as exhibits.
He said the command was intensifying efforts to arrest other fleeing members of the syndicate and determine the full extent of their activities.
Orchia said the commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Cletus Nwadiobu, has urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
