British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has declared about £345,000 in political donations and support received over the past year, including substantial contributions towards his Labour leadership campaign before he entered Downing Street.

The disclosures were contained in Burnham’s first declaration of financial interests since returning to the House of Commons in June. Official government and parliamentary records confirm that Burnham returned as Labour MP for Makerfield before becoming Labour leader and prime minister in July 2026.

The largest declared contribution was £164,347 from businessman and Labour donor Lord Sainsbury of Turville. The support included office space and contractors working on policy and operations.

Burnham also received £50,000 from Charlie Parsons Creative, £35,000 from former Greater Manchester night-time economy adviser Sacha Lord and £25,000 from businessman Gary Lubner towards his leadership campaign. ThinkLabour, formerly known as Labour Together, provided more than £22,000 in staffing and IT support

Lord David Blunkett contributed £2,000 towards Burnham’s successful Makerfield parliamentary campaign, while trade unions including Unison, the Communication Workers Union and the Fire Brigades Union provided a combined £20,000 for mayoral campaigning.

The declarations also covered non-cash assistance including polling, travel, staffing, social-media support, IT equipment and campaign facilities.

Burnham separately declared hospitality and gifts received while serving as Greater Manchester mayor, including tickets to Glastonbury Festival, the Brit Awards, Aintree Racecourse and a cricket match, as well as gifts from the Qatari ambassador.

A Labour Party spokesperson said political campaigns were properly funded through donations rather than public money and maintained that the declarations had been made in accordance with parliamentary and Electoral Commission requirements.

Politics

The disclosures come less than a month after Burnham became prime minister on July 20, succeeding Keir Starmer. The UK government officially records Burnham as prime minister and first lord of the treasury from that date.
