Canada-based doctor and social commentator Zo has weighed in on the ongoing conversation surrounding a trending video involving businessman Tony Elumelu and a young lady.
Reacting to the video, Zo argued that the perceived disrespect Gen Zs show towards older people is partly a result of the younger generation having witnessed the private and less dignified sides of some elders.
According to him, older Nigerians cannot entirely blame Gen Zs for their attitude towards them because some elders have contributed to the erosion of the respect traditionally accorded to age.
Zo said that when older people become closely involved with younger women, including women who could be their children’s age, they should not be surprised if the younger generation eventually treats them differently.
He referenced situations where older men, including wealthy and influential figures, marry women who are significantly younger than them, questioning what kind of relationship they expect to have with the younger generation afterwards.
He further suggested that once an older person becomes familiar with younger people and allows them to see sides of their lives that were traditionally kept private, the younger generation may no longer relate to them solely based on their age or status.
Zo, however, acknowledged that respect for elders remains important, while arguing that respect must also be earned through one’s conduct and the example set for younger people.
