A 38-year-old woman, Sarah Sunday, on Wednesday sought dissolution of her 11-year-old marriage to her husband, James, before a Kaduna Customary Court on grounds of disrespect to her and their marriage.

In her petition, Sunday, a mother of two, also alleged that her husband does not love her anymore.

The petitioner told the court that her husband does not respect her as a wife, their marriage, or as the mother of his children.

“My husband talks to his girlfriend every night in my presence, and the first time I talked to him about it, he told me that he will not stop.

“My husband told me that whenever I am tired of the marriage, I should leave because I cautioned him to stop disrespecting me,” she said.

The petitioner further told the court that her husband does not like discussing anything with her but would rather talk to his girlfriend for hours every night.

“My husband is not working. I pay the bills for everything in the house, including our children school fees and still I am not enough.

His stubborn attitude and lack of love towards me has caused me heartache and I can no longer continue in a marriage where I am not wanted.

“I want the court to separate us and grant me custody of my children,” she said.

In his response, James opposed his wife’s prayer for divorce, adding that he was not ready for the dissolution.

He promised to make things right if given another chance, and prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him make a reconciliatory move.

“I love my wife but she is sometimes difficult and selfish,” she said.

The presiding Judge, Dauda John, after listening to both parties, advised the couple to be at peace with each other.

John adjourned the matter until Sept. 22 for a report of reconciliation/hearing.
