New movie, “Properties of the Gods,” which seeks to address the Osu caste system and the issue of social exclusion in Igboland, is set to premiere in cinemas nationwide on Sept. 4.
The producer of the movie, Mr Joseph Okechukwu, disclosed this at a news conference in Enugu on Tuesday.
He said the movie was directed by Uzodinma Okpechi and Okechukwu Oku, while Patrick Nnamani wrote the screenplay.
Okechukwu added that the movie was produced to challenge the practice of branding fellow human beings as inferior because of circumstances arising from historical events.
He described the practice as “devilish and uncharitable,” stressing that the movie would help audiences to understand the meaning of the expression “accident of history” in relation to the Osu caste system.
He explained that “this movie is going to help people understand ‘accident of history,’ because people never understood why it was described as an accident of history.
“By the time you finish watching the movie, before you even leave the cinema, you already understand what it means.”
The veteran Nollywood actor said the movie would be screened in cinemas across the country, including Lagos and other parts of the North, South, West and East.
Okechukwu said the movie featured prominent Nollywood actors, including Pete Edochie, the late Onyeka Onwenu, Enyinna Nwigwe, Maria Chike-Benjamin, Zack Orji, Hilda Dokubo, Elvina Ubru, Obi Okoli Ofia Mbaka and Jennifer Eliogu.
He added that Edochie, who inspired the production, also played a lead role in the movie.
The producer said the movie was intended to contribute to the campaign for the abolition of the Osu caste system and promote a more progressive and inclusive society.
He, however, said audiences would ultimately determine the quality and impact of the movie after watching it.
