Nine persons have been killed after gunmen opened fire on a passenger bus at Dungus, Kuru District, Jos South Local Government Area (LGA).
The Plateau Police Command confirmed the attack in a statement by its Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Alfred Alabo, on Monday in Jos.
The command said it received a distress report at about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday that gunmen operating on a motorcycle had attacked the bus.
According to the statement, the Toyota bus, with registration number BUU 621 ZL, was conveying passengers to Jos when the gunmen opened fire.
It said seven persons were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others who sustained gunshot injuries later died in hospital.
The police said the development brought the total number of fatalities from the attack to nine.
The Commissioner of Police (CP), Ayodeji Faniyan, immediately mobilised Mobile Police personnel, tactical teams, homicide detectives and forensic experts to the scene.
themomentng reports that the teams charged to commence investigation and pursue the perpetrators were drawn from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The CP condemned the attack, describing it as callous, while commiserating with the families of the deceased and residents of Plateau.
He ordered a vigorous manhunt for the perpetrators and directed policemen to work with sister security agencies to ensure the attackers were arrested and prosecuted.
The command also reminded residents that the ban on commercial motorcycle operations within areas covered by the Greater Jos Master Plan remained in force.
It said the ban would be enforced, adding that commercial motorcycle operators found violating the directive would face the full weight of the law.
Faniyan urged residents not to panic but remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the police or other security agencies.
