A Nigerian scholar, Dr Ayodele Temidayo Odularu, has died in South Africa, with her family seeking answers over the circumstances surrounding her death.
Odularu, 51, was found dead at her residence in Eastern Cape Province. She was associated with the University of Fort Hare, where she worked as an independent senior researcher and contributed to academic research.
Her brother, Dr Gbadebo Odularu, confirmed her death after a GoFundMe campaign was created in her memory and to support efforts following her passing.
According to Punch, a member of the family, who requested anonymity, said Odularu did not die from natural causes. The relative added that the exact circumstances surrounding her death had yet to be established.
Odularu died on August 16, 2026, while her family has called for an investigation to determine what happened.
A statement published on the GoFundMe page paid tribute to the scholar and described the impact she had on her family, friends and colleagues.
“With hearts filled with gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Dr Ayodele Temidayo Odularu, who departed this world at the age of 51.
“Dr. Ayodele was far more than a sister. She was a cherished daughter, aunt, friend, mentor, scholar, and source of encouragement, compassion, wisdom, and strength to everyone blessed to know her.
“Her presence brought warmth into every room. She was known for her kindness, infectious laughter, generosity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others. She had a rare ability to make people feel valued, heard, and inspired,” the GoFundMe statement read.
During her academic career, Odularu focused on research aimed at improving lives and supporting communities. Her work covered areas including access to knowledge, education, sustainable development and opportunities for underserved communities.
The University of Fort Hare held a memorial service for the Nigerian scholar on Thursday, with her contributions and academic legacy remembered.
“Her work reflected a deep commitment to addressing challenges that affect everyday lives, including access to knowledge, educational opportunity, sustainable development, and solutions that empower underserved communities,” the statement added.
Her family continues to seek clarity over the circumstances of her death as they mourn the scholar, mentor and researcher.
