WAEC appoints Amos Dangut as registrar, CEO

The West African Examinations Council has appointed a Nigerian education administrator, Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.

Dangut assumed office on October 1, 2026, becoming the 14th person to occupy the position and succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

According to a statement issued by WAEC Headquarters’ Head of Public Affairs, Demianus G. Ojijeogu, Dangut’s appointment was ratified by the council’s governing board at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March.

His tenure will run for five years, ending in September 2031.

Dangut previously served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 until September 2026.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a PhD in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

He joined WAEC in 1998 after beginning his education career at St. Louis College, Jos, in 1994, where he worked as a teacher and WAEC examiner.

Over the course of his career with the council, Dangut has held several positions spanning test development, examination security, administration and post-examination activities.

His previous roles include Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division in Lagos, Head of Examinations Security, Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi, Branch Controller in Yola, Controller of the Post-Examinations Department, Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja and Deputy Registrar in charge of the National Office.

During his time as head of WAEC’s Nigerian office, Dangut oversaw the introduction and expansion of several technology-driven initiatives.

These included computer-based WASSCE, the serialization of examination question papers and a digital electronic marking system.

He also supervised the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and technology systems supporting examination logistics and examiner monitoring.

WAEC said Dangut had more than two decades of experience in test development and administration, with a focus on using information and communications technology to improve examination processes.

He has also served on the boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Grange Educational Foundation.

Dangut has represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

His professional record includes publications in national and international journals and presentations at conferences.

He currently represents the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

Dangut is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management.

He has also received commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006, as well as an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his National Youth Service year.
