Two miners were shot dead by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias at a mining site in Kuru Jenta, Heipang District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at about 11:30pm on Friday while the victims and other miners were carrying out activities at the site.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.
Tengwong described the attack as unprovoked and unfortunate, noting that it occurred barely a week after two other miners were killed at another mining site in Rakum village, Jos South Local Government Area.
He called on security agencies to investigate the latest incident, identify the perpetrators and ensure that they were brought to justice.
The BYM spokesman also advised residents, particularly miners, to avoid mining activities at night and remain vigilant amid the prevailing security situation in the state.
He expressed concern that the latest attack occurred despite a curfew imposed by the state government on three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi.
Tengwong urged residents to comply with the restricted hours and observe all security measures put in place by the government.
He also advised residents to avoid activities that could expose them to danger and to take necessary precautions in view of the security challenges in the area.
