The unspoken truth about body odour: Why it’s time to have the conversation

There is a particular kind of silence that settles in when someone has body odour. A discreet step backwards. A window quietly opened. A friend nudging another, followed by a knowing look. Sometimes, it becomes a joke that everyone laughs at, except the person who needs to hear it most.

Many Nigerians will recognise these moments, whether from a crowded danfo on a hot afternoon or a packed office after a long commute. Heat, humidity and sweat are familiar parts of daily life. Talking about body odour, however, often feels less comfortable.

Body odour is a common human experience, yet embarrassment can make it difficult to address. Someone may not realise their odour is noticeable, while those around them struggle to raise the subject kindly. Ridicule, gossip and avoidance offer little help.

This is the conversation #StoptheSmell wants to bring into the open.

The campaign encourages Nigerians to rethink how they talk about body odour and personal hygiene. Through humour, relatable stories and practical information, it aims to replace awkward silence with awareness and more considerate conversations.

The idea is simple: people should be able to understand their bodies and take care of themselves without feeling shamed for asking questions or seeking help. Addressing body odour is not always a matter of simply telling someone to take a bath. It can involve understanding the body, identifying possible triggers, making changes to everyday routines and recognising when the advice of a healthcare professional advice is needed.

#StoptheSmell also encourages people to pay attention to their hygiene habits and seek professional advice when needed. The goal is to help people care for themselves with greater understanding and confidence.

We cannot always control the heat or the length of our daily commute. But we can be more aware of our bodies and more thoughtful in how we speak to one another. Conversations about
body odour should help people, rather than happen behind their backs.

Follow the Stop the Smell campaign on Instagram at @ministryofboaffairs and on YouTube for relatable stories, honest conversations and practical hygiene tips. Join the conversation and help make talking about body odour a little less awkward.
