The Government of Mexico has formally accepted the appointment of former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country.
Omokri announced the development on Wednesday in a post on his X handle, disclosing that the Mexican Embassy in Abuja had delivered the diplomatic agreement confirming his appointment.
According to him, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, presented the agreement to the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.
The diplomatic approval, known as agrément, signifies Mexico’s formal acceptance of Omokri as Nigeria’s representative in the country.
Omokri is expected to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Expressing gratitude over the development, he wrote on X: “To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States.”
GWG.ng reports that President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for the diplomatic position in November 2025 alongside 68 other ambassadorial nominees.
Those nominated at the time included former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025, while Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate on March 6, 2026. Omokri was assigned to Mexico City.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier disclosed that Mexico and Japan were yet to grant approval for Nigeria’s nominees posted to the two countries.
The ministry expressed optimism that the outstanding diplomatic clearances would be secured in due course.
With Mexico’s approval now secured, Omokri has received the host country’s formal consent to represent Nigeria in the country.
