A 400-level Medicine and Surgery student of Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, Chibunna Ochor, has emerged as the winner of the university’s Vice-Chancellor for One Day competition for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke, announced this on Wednesday during the university’s 17th Foundation Day celebration in Enugu.
The initiative is designed to reward academic excellence and give outstanding students an opportunity to experience the responsibilities of university leadership.
Anieke said eight students achieved a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 during the 2025/2026 academic session, prompting the university to organise an aptitude test to select the overall winner.
He said Ochor emerged victorious after the exercise, adding that all eight contestants had obtained A grades in all their courses.
According to him, Ochor will occupy the vice-chancellor’s seat for one day, address students and members of the university governing council and Senate, and pay an official visit to Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State.
“The eight students scored a CGPA of 5.0, meaning that they obtained As in all their courses. They will receive prizes alongside certificates, and I congratulate all of them,” he said.
The vice-chancellor also rewarded students who excelled in national debates, public speaking and other academic competitions, as well as outstanding members of staff.
He said the university had established a Directorate of Competitions to promote academic excellence and enable its students to compete favourably with their counterparts in other Nigerian universities.
Speaking on the institution’s 17th anniversary, he attributed its growth and achievements to God’s grace, determination, sacrifice and the contributions of individuals who believed in its vision.
He recalled that the idea of establishing the university began in the last quarter of 2007, while the National Universities Commission (NUC) conducted its first assessment visit on June 10, 2008.
According to him, the commission returned in 2009 and expressed satisfaction with the level of infrastructural development and the university’s compliance with its requirements.
He said the development paved the way for the university’s approval on Oct. 21, 2009, during the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
In his remarks, Mr Chima Obieze, the member representing Ezeagu Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, commended the university for its commitment to human capital development.
Obieze said that while governments often focused on building roads, schools, hospitals and other physical infrastructure, greater attention should also be given to developing the human resources needed to manage such facilities.
He praised the university’s management for its contributions to education and announced an increase in his financial reward for the institution’s best graduating Law student from N500,000 to N1 million.
Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Nwachukwu Okeke, described the establishment and subsequent growth of the university as a remarkable achievement.
Okeke expressed gratitude to God for the institution’s progress and acknowledged the sacrifices of individuals who contributed to its establishment and development.
themomentng reports that the celebration began with a Holy Mass officiated by Anieke, while Rev. Fr. Benjamin Achi delivered the homily, commending the university for its achievements over the past 17 years.
