Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is strengthening succession arrangements within his business empire by assigning greater leadership responsibilities to his three daughters, Mariya, Halima and Fatima Dangote.

The move comes as the 69-year-old billionaire prepares for a generational transition across his conglomerate, which has interests in cement, sugar, fertiliser and petroleum refining.

According to a Bloomberg report published on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Dangote’s succession strategy coincides with plans to sell a minority stake in his $20 billion refinery, a transaction projected to raise at least $1.6 billion.

Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimates suggest that the proposed public offering could increase Dangote’s wealth to approximately $58 billion.

The conglomerate generates an estimated $20 billion in annual revenue, while Dangote is expected to retain more than 80 per cent ownership of the refinery after the share offering.

Daughters Take on Expanded Responsibilities

Dangote’s three daughters, who have spent more than a decade working within the family businesses, assumed expanded leadership roles in February 2026.

Mariya Dangote, 47, oversees commercial strategy across the group’s cement and food operations, including sugar and salt production.

Halima Dangote, 42, manages the family’s investment office in Dubai, coordinating financial and legal advisers responsible for managing and expanding the family’s wealth.

Fatima Dangote, 40, a lawyer who joined the conglomerate in 2012, oversees corporate communications and handles responsibilities relating to fertiliser and energy sales.

Despite their growing influence, the sisters said no decision had been made on who would eventually succeed their father as chief executive.

Fatima explained that each sister was concentrating on areas where she could contribute most effectively, rather than competing for overall control.

Mariya also clarified that their father had no immediate intention of stepping down, although he planned to reduce his involvement in the daily management of individual businesses.

Refinery IPO and Expansion Plans

The leadership restructuring comes amid efforts to attract new investors and expand the group’s presence in international capital markets.

In September 2026, Dangote Refinery launched a ₦2.15 trillion initial public offering, involving 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 each.

Proceeds from the offering are expected to support plans to increase the refinery’s processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day.

According to an analysis of the refinery’s prospectus, Dangote is expected to retain approximately 84.34 per cent beneficial ownership following the offering.

Meanwhile, Dangote Cement is pursuing a secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange to attract international investors and diversify its shareholder base.

The Nigerian Exchange Group has also extended the refinery’s IPO campaign to Egypt, Ethiopia and Botswana, with the subscription deadline moved from October 13 to October 27, 2026.

The developments reflect Dangote’s efforts to expand his industrial operations while gradually preparing the next generation of family leadership, without immediately relinquishing control of the conglomerate.
