OPay has told its customers that only those who see a special notification on their mobile app are eligible for the Federal Government’s ₦50,000 monthly relief payment.

The fintech company clarified this in a post on 𝕏 on Tuesday, as interest in the National Emergency Relief and stabilisation Intervention grew.

According to OPay, customers selected by the government will see a pop-up on the app homepage that will guide them through the steps to receive the money.

“Kindly note that customers who are unable to see the feature on the app are not eligible for it. Please note that we do not determine your eligibility,” the company said, directing further enquiries to the NERSI helpline on 07000222222.

The firm also cautioned customers to watch out for fraudsters who might try to cash in on the scheme.

“OPay will never ask for your PIN or OTP to process a NERSI relief payment. Do not pay any agent or click unverified links,” it warned.

It advised customers to rely only on its official app and USSD channel to check their status.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, on October 30 announced the start of the programme, under which vulnerable Nigerians will get ₦50,000 every month to cope with the high cost of living.

He said the government had engaged licensed digital financial service providers to handle disbursement and that beneficiaries would receive a consent SMS before funds are sent to their accounts or wallets.

The participating platforms are ALAT by Wema, MoMo PSB, NairaGram, OPay and Moniepoint.

Doro stressed that the relief does not require any application, fee, or registration through agents.

He urged Nigerians not to disclose their PINs or BVNs to anyone and to call the official helpline, 0700-022-2222, if they are in doubt about any message related to the programme.
