Fresh facts have emerged on why former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, became uncomfortable with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Findings by Daily Trust revealed that internal wrangling within the ADC made it difficult for the two presidential hopefuls to continue with the party.

Obi and Kwankwaso had joined the ADC after it emerged as a coalition platform for opposition forces seeking to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

However, less than four days after the Supreme Court recognised the leadership of Senator David Mark but directed the party to return to the trial court, the two politicians reportedly made it clear that their presidential hopes no longer rested with the ADC.

Zoning Controversy Unsettles Obi, Kwankwaso

Sources said Obi and Kwankwaso were uncomfortable with the ADC’s silence on zoning its presidential ticket.

They were also said to be displeased that the party continued preparations as though zoning did not matter.

Apart from the zoning issue, some members reportedly felt that the party was being seen as belonging to one presidential aspirant, with no serious effort made to correct the impression.

A source within the party said, “The idea that the ADC was formed by some people and the rest of us are seen as latter-day joiners did not sit well with us.”

Obi Laments Treatment

Obi appeared to reflect this sentiment in a statement where he spoke about being treated like an outsider despite making sincere contributions.

He said, “Even within spaces where one labours sincerely, one is sometimes treated like an outsider in one’s own home. You and your team become easy targets for every failure, frustration, or misunderstanding, as though honest contribution has become a favour being tolerated rather than appreciated.

“And when you choose to leave so that those you are leaving can have peace, and you step out into the cold, you are still maligned and your character is questioned.”

The former Labour Party presidential candidate said he had continued to work for a better Nigeria despite criticisms from those who questioned his motives.

“Despite all your efforts to continue working for a better Nigeria and engaging people with sincerity and goodwill, those who do not wish you well continue to attack your character and question your intentions,” he said.

‘Environment Has Become Toxic’

Obi also lamented what he described as the emotional burden and pressure faced by those trying to serve sincerely in difficult circumstances.

He said, “Many people do not truly understand the silent pains some of us carry daily, the private struggles, emotional burdens, and quiet battles we face while trying to survive and serve sincerely in difficult circumstances.

“We now live in an environment that has become increasingly toxic, where the very system that should protect and create opportunities for decent living often works against the people, a society where intimidation, insecurity, endless scrutiny, and discouragement have become normal.”

He added that it was more painful when people expected to offer understanding and solidarity became part of the pressure.

“More painful is when some of those you associate with, believing you would find understanding and solidarity among them, become part of the pressure you face. Some who publicly identify with you privately distance themselves or join in unfair criticism,” Obi said.
