The Nigeria Police Force has sacked Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Nuhu Usman, along with four members of his team following the death of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, who announced the dismissal, said the officers would be prosecuted.
themomentng reports that the decision was made after an internal review of the incident, which drew public anger across social media.
The case involved the killing of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, during an operation carried out by officers attached to the Effurun Area Command.
The Police had earlier explained that the operation took place on April 26, 2026, after officers received information that Ogidi had been caught while trying to send a package. The parcel was said to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Following the unlawful killing of Ogidi, Usman and his team were taken into custody and transferred to the Force Headquarters, where they faced disciplinary proceedings.
The matter was reviewed by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which looked into the circumstances surrounding the killing and the actions of the officers.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved their removal from service after the committee’s findings. The recommendation was then sent to the Police Service Commission for confirmation, in line with standard procedure.
Investigations showed that the officers did not follow the rules guiding the use of firearms and acted outside established police regulations. Based on this, the committee advised that all those involved should be dismissed immediately.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP said.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he added.
