Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, has been named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Men’s Footballer of the Year after a standout individual season in England.
According to BBC Sport on Friday, the Portuguese midfielder was recognised for his consistency, creativity, and leadership throughout the campaign, where he delivered impressive numbers for United despite mixed team fortunes.
Fernandes recorded eight goals and 20 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, playing a central role in Manchester United’s improved form under interim manager Michael Carrick.
The FWA praised his influence and overall contribution, as United pushed toward a strong league finish and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Fernandes becomes the first Manchester United player to win the award since Wayne Rooney in 2010, underlining the significance of his achievement.
He joined United from Sporting CP in January 2020 for £67.7 million and recently reached the milestone of 300 appearances for the club, cementing his status as one of the team’s most important players in recent years.
Despite earlier speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford, including reported interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, Fernandes chose to stay and continue leading the team.
His current contract runs until 2027, with an option for an additional year, and his form this season is expected to prompt further discussions over a potential extension.
Fernandes has previously stated that he would only consider his long-term future after the upcoming World Cup, remaining focused on his performances for both club and country.
