The family of Ibrahim Mbaya, the graduate of the University of Jos, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Jos, Plateau State, has announced that he will be buried on Thursday.
His younger brother, James Mbaya, disclosed this in an interview with PUNCH Online, saying preparations were being made to lay the 25-year-old to rest.
According to him, Ibrahim will be buried in his hometown in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State.
“We are making arrangements for his corpse to be brought home. He will be buried on Thursday,” James said.
He described his brother’s death as a devastating loss to the family, saying their parents had been left shattered by the tragedy.
“His (Ibrahim) death has really devastated us, especially our parents. I don’t think they are ever going to recover from the shock of his death because he was the first child and the first male child of the family. We had great expectations from him.
“He had a lot of dreams that were unachieved. We are really disheartened about his death, but there is nothing we can do about it again; we just have to take it in good faith and hope that justice is done,” James added.
He described his brother as a talented model, dancer, and entrepreneur whose dreams of owning a fashion house and restaurant were cut short by the tragic incident.
The family called on the police to ensure that everyone involved in the killing is brought to justice.
“Everyone involved in his death should get the punishment they deserve, although this won’t bring him back, but it is the best thing that can ever happen to the family after his tragic loss.
“The manner in which he died was very brutal and inhumane. Nobody should have gone through such inhumane treatment. I can never wish my enemy to be treated that way by those animals. Nobody should die such a brutal death. It is quite terrible and horrifying,” he said.
PUNCH Online reports that the incident occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos, Plateau State.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that three suspects identified as Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji had been arrested in connection with the alleged culpable homicide.
Mbaya, a Jos-based model, had reportedly attended a social event before spending the night at a friend’s apartment because it was too late for him to return home.
According to reports, the following morning, his friend informed him that an iPhone was missing and accused him of being the prime suspect since they were the only occupants of the apartment.
Although Mbaya initially left, he reportedly returned after being called back to explain himself.
On his return, the command added that he was allegedly confronted by his friend and a group of youths, who accused him of stealing the phone.
According to the police, witnesses alleged that the group assaulted him with sticks and other objects for several hours in an attempt to force a confession until he lost consciousness.
A nurse who later examined him reportedly confirmed that he had died.
