Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery after sustaining an injury during training. The Premier League club confirmed the development on Friday, October 16, raising fresh concerns over the England international’s availability.
The 26-year-old defender missed Chelsea’s 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on October 10. Medical assessments conducted after the training-ground injury established that surgery was necessary.
Chelsea confirmed that the operation was successful and that James had already begun his rehabilitation programme. The club’s medical department will supervise his recovery at its Cobham training facility.
The latest setback comes after James had been working towards regaining full fitness following an earlier hamstring problem. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had expressed optimism about the captain’s recovery before the Bournemouth encounter.
However, James suffered another injury during training on October 9, prompting his exclusion from the squad. Alonso subsequently confirmed that the defender had picked up a fresh problem and would undergo further assessment.
Earlier report identified James among five Chelsea players pushing to return after the international break. The defender had been receiving treatment alongside several teammates as the club prepared to resume Premier League action.
James has experienced several injury interruptions during his Chelsea career, including previous hamstring problems that required lengthy rehabilitation. The England international has also undergone surgery in the past, missing significant periods of competitive football.
Chelsea have yet to announce an official timetable for James’ return to action. The club said its medical staff would continue supporting the captain throughout his rehabilitation and wished him a speedy recovery.
