A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Zana Akpagu, has resigned his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Akpagu said his decision was informed by unresolved court cases and legal uncertainties currently affecting the party.
His resignation was contained in a letter dated April 26, 2026, and made available to journalists on Friday in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The letter was addressed to the ADC Chairman of Ipong Ward in Obudu Local Government Area, Pastor Emmanuel Ugar Ugwakong.
In the letter, the former vice-chancellor said the decision followed consultations with his family, friends, associates and political followers.
He stated, “I write to inform you of my resignation of my membership of the African Democratic Congress with immediate effect.
“This decision comes after consultation with family, friends, associates and followers, largely based on the uncertainties arising from the unsettled court cases and legal hurdles placed on the pathway of the ADC.”
Akpagu said the legal issues surrounding the party had created uncertainty, making it necessary for him to leave.
The former UNICAL vice-chancellor also expressed appreciation to members of the party for the support he received during his time in the ADC.
He said, “I express appreciation to all members for the understanding and support. Thanks for your understanding.”
The resignation letter was duly acknowledged and signed on behalf of the party.
Akpagu did not disclose his next political destination in the letter.
Akpagu served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar from 2015 to 2020. He is also a professor of African and Caribbean Literatures in French.
