A former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
themomentng reports that Nnaji polled 7,424 votes to defeat Samson Nnamani, who secured 600 votes in the primary election held in Enugu.
The exercise was conducted by the state governorship primary committee, chaired by Hon. Austin Nwachukwu.
In his acceptance speech, Nnaji thanked party members for giving him the mandate and promised not to take it for granted.
He said his administration would reduce the suffering of residents by reviewing what he described as excessive taxation in the state.
Nnaji stated, “I give this victory to the glory of God and to the people of Enugu, who have been oppressed in the last three years and overburdened with excessive and obnoxious taxes.
“Landlords are paying through their nose, hoteliers are crying, commercial motorcyclists are almost out of existence, and even people carrying water on their heads are taxed.
“These are the people the government should be supporting financially.”
Nnaji said his governorship ambition was driven by the desire to recover, rebuild and industrialise Enugu State.
He further stated, “That is the fulcrum of this struggle, the struggle to recover Enugu State, rebuild Enugu State and industrialise Enugu State so as to tackle youth restiveness.
“We will build industries to create jobs for our people. Jim Nwobodo is the only governor in this state that built industries, and those industries are now being appropriated by the current administration. That will not continue in Enugu State.”
The former minister reiterated his commitment to improving the living conditions of residents within four years.
He also pledged to serve only one term in office if elected governor.
Earlier, Nwachukwu commended party members for their orderly conduct before, during and after the primary.
He said the outcome of the exercise showed that the PDP remained strong and well-positioned to win the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State.
