The President of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), Vera Osokpo, has called for greater emphasis on innovation and future-ready training in Nigeria’s maritime sector, saying the country must take the lead in Africa if it hopes to emerge as the continent’s maritime hub.
Osokpo made the call on Friday at the 2026 Maritime Training Summit organised by AMJON at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, with the theme “The Power of Innovation in a Future-Ready Maritime Training Agenda.”
She said the theme was deliberately chosen to highlight the need for stakeholders in the maritime industry to prepare for a new phase driven by innovation, technology and changing demands in the global maritime space.
“If Nigeria must lead in Africa, our maritime sector must take the lead.”
The AMJON President stressed that the maritime industry could not afford to remain behind in adopting innovations that are reshaping the sector globally, noting that adequate training is essential to equipping professionals with the knowledge required to navigate the emerging landscape.
She also highlighted the critical role of maritime journalists in driving public understanding of developments in the sector, describing the media as a bridge between policymakers, industry stakeholders and the wider public.
Osokpo said journalists must understand innovation and emerging trends in the maritime sector in order to report them accurately and contribute meaningfully to conversations around the industry’s future.
“If we do not understand innovation, we cannot report it. If we do not understand the future, we cannot shape the narrative.”
According to her, the gathering should rekindle the purpose of maritime journalism and encourage practitioners to learn, innovate and tell stories capable of positioning Nigeria as a maritime hub in Africa.
Osokpo commended NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML) for collaborating with AMJON on the summit, saying the partnership demonstrates the important role the private sector plays in building the future of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
She also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigeria Customs Service and the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for their participation.
The AMJON President further acknowledged the contributions of the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Navy and other security agencies involved in securing the nation’s waterways, ports, and maritime environment.
She said the presence of policymakers, government officials, security chiefs and other dignitaries at the summit underscores the importance of the maritime sector to the Nigerian economy.
Osokpo also used the occasion to celebrate Nigerians who had distinguished themselves through service and excellence, as AMJON honoured selected individuals and stakeholders for their contributions to the country.
She urged participants to make the most of the summit and apply the knowledge gained towards advancing Nigeria’s maritime industry.
